If you are on the waiting list, you can still access the course via Quercus, but the Quercus quizzes associated with each week’s lecture preparation activities will not be available to you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Am I ready for CSC148?
- Q: Can I take CSC148 if I do not have a credit in CSC108?
A: You can. Credit in CSC108 is not a formal prerequisite for CSC148, however CSC148 assumes students have the background knowledge and skills taught in CSC108. - Q: Am I well-prepared to succeed in CSC148?
A: Here are some common scenarios:- If you have a credit in CSC108 and feel you developed solid skills and understanding of the course material, you have all the preparation we expect for CSC148.
- If you have other prior programming experience, you can consider skipping CSC108. You will find information on how to choose your first CS course, including a sample CSC108 exam to help you assess your level here.
- If you do not have prior programming experience, we strongly encourage you to take CSC108 before proceeding to CSC148.
Just joined CSC148?
Q: I just enrolled! How can I catch up?
A: Start by reading the course syllabus on Quercus and reviewing the Quercus site. These, along with the announcements on Quercus and your UofT email, are required reading for all students in CSC148. Then, catch up on what you missed. For each week, this includes:- lecture preparation (“prep”),
- in-class slides, worksheets, etc.,
- and lab exercises. You can find links to all these materials on the Lectures page on Quercus.
Q: I missed some due dates - will I lose marks?
A: You should complete any work you have missed as soon as possible, as each week’s material depends on your understanding of the previous content. However you will not be penalized for deadlines you missed because you were not enrolled in the course. Deadlines missed because you weren’t enrolled in the course will be waived when computing your final grade.Q: Do I need access to the PCRS system that CSC108 uses?
A: No. We won’t be using PCRS for CSC148.
Still trying to enrol in CSC148?
- Q: What if I miss deadlines because I’m not in the course?
A: The first deadline is on Thurs, September 12. Students will not be penalized for coursework missed because they weren’t enrolled in the course, however you are responsible for catching up on missed material. - Q: Can I attend the lab while I am still on the waitlist?
A: No, we only have space in the labs for enrolled students. - Q: Will there be another section of CSC148 added?
A: No, we will not be able to open another section of CSC148 this term. - Q: I need this course for my program. Can you enrol me in CSC148?
A: Instructors cannot enrol students in courses. If you need CSC148 and are not able to enrol, you should speak to your college registrar for advice on how to proceed. - Q: I want to drop down from CSC148 from CSC108. Can you add me to the course?
A: Instructors cannot enrol students in courses. You should speak with your college registrar if you want to drop down. Note that you are responsible for catching up with CSC108 if you do drop down.
Auditting CSC148
