The user name:
- shows that you are allowed to use the CDF computers
- identifies you for tracking purposes, such as the 'from' field in e-mail
messages you send
- is paired with a personal "home directory" for your files and all
system and application program settings.
Having a user name keeps these things separate for separate people.
The password prevents other people from impersonating you for these purposes.
