The online formats of CSC108 in Fall 2021
-
*NEW* Q: I'm enrolled in one section of the course, but would like to attend
another. Can I do that?
A: In short, no (for now).
We know that students like having the flexibility to attend a section other than the one they are enrolled in. However, with the limitations of moving to teaching fully online, we ask that students attend their registered section for now. If there is space on ACORN, consider switching your enrollment to the section you prefer to attend. We also plan to reassess this after the first couple weeks of class, to see if it will be feasible to accommodate students in sections other than the one they are registered in. -
*NEW* Q: Will lectures be recorded?
A: CSC108 is taught using a flipped approach. We’ll post a set of videos each week for students to watch before lectures. During the synchronous lectures, students will work on applying what they learned in the videos with the support of TAs, their peers, and the instructor. Those sessions are highly interactive and participating live is best in order to get the most out of them. We will aim to record one session per day for those who aren’t able to attend, but those recordings are only meant to be used occasionally, not on a regular basis. -
Q: When are tests held?
A: Term Tests will be held during your scheduled synchronous lecture time. There will also be an online final exam, the timing of which will be announced at a later date. -
Q: Can I write the term test with a different section of the class at a more convenient time of day?
A: Unfortunately, no. Due to technical issues, you will only be able to access the test for the lecture section in which you are enrolled and only at the scheduled time. -
Q: I am not in the Toronto timezone, will you be able to change timing of synchronous classes and tests for me?
A: No. All students who enroll in CSC108 must attend tests held during their lecture time. -
Q: What are the technical requirements to take CSC108?
A: In addition to the minimum technical requirements listed here by the Office of the Vice Provost, Students, students enrolled in CSC108 will need to be able to install software on their own computer. In our experience, limited capability devices like the iPad or Chromebooks are not sufficient. You will need to have a reliable high-speed internet connection. We also recommend a microphone for participation in office hours. -
Q: How can I get ready to be successful in my online courses?
A: Take a look through this page on Getting Ready for Online Learning. The technical requirements are a bit different for CSC108, however the other sections are relevant for any online course.

Q: I need this course for my program. Can you enrol me in CSC108?
A: Instructors cannot enrol students in courses. If you need CSC108 and were not able to enrol, you should speak to your college registrar for advice on how to proceed. -
Q: I want to take CSC148. Do I need to take CSC108 first?
A: CSC108 is not a prerequisite course for CSC148, however, CSC148 assumes students have the background knowledge covered in CSC108.- If you have prior programming experience, you can consider skipping CSC108. You can find information on how to choose your first CS course, including a sample CSC108 exam to help you assess your level here.
- If you do not have prior programming experience, we strongly encourage you to take CSC108 before proceeding to CSC148.

Q: I want to audit CSC108. Can I attend lectures? Can you give me access to PCRS?
A: We cannot accommodate students who are not enrolled in the course in our lectures.
We also cannot give PCRS access to students who are not enrolled in the course. However, you can find the videos online here.
